Dermatology Referral Information

NHS Ayrshire & Arran Dermatology Service is available for acute dermatology advice 7 days per week, 9am-5pm.

In the first instance, clinical management advice contained within the Therapeutics Handbook should be consulted as a first port of call to manage common dermatology conditions.

If following this inpatient advice is still required, routine referrals should be submitted to the Dermatology secretaries by 3pm (Monday-Friday). Please call the dermatology secretaries via switchboard, who will then advise the appropriate individual to email the new referral form located on AthenA (search 'dermatology referral' or find under the Medicine site / Referral Finder). Ensure clinical photographs have already been requested prior to sending the referral with a contact number detailed. If urgent/emergency advice is required, please make contact via switchboard to the on-call dermatology page.

Please note the Dermatology on-call service is not for routine or non-urgent advice. Pre-existing stable dermatoses prior to admission will not be addressed by the on-call Dermatology service and should be addressed by primary care.  If secondary care advice is required for this, an internal referral letter for outpatient review should be completed via RMS.

Similarly, if Dermatology input is required regarding a lesion, please arrange clinical photographs and an internal referral letter for outpatient review should be completed via RMS.

If urgent Dermatology advice is required over the weekend between 9am-5pm, please contact the on-call Dermatologist via switchboard.
