Genital tract and sexually transmitted infections (STI)

Testing and referral of STI

Testing for STIs should be offered opportunistically as part of routine consultation (e.g. smear tests) as there is often reluctance to attend specific Sexual Health Services.

Remember to test for syphilis and HIV.

What should be referred to Sexual Health?

  • New diagnosis of syphilis: always refer to Sexual Health Services
  • New diagnosis of gonorrhoea: always refer to Sexual Health Services
