Option for Penicillin Allergic Pregnant Patients

Use Clarithromycin oral 250-500mg 12 hourly in penicillin allergic pregnant patients in the following indications:

Indication Duration

Acute otitis media

5 days

Acute sore throat

5 days

Acute rhinosinusitis

5 days

Animal bites (oral treatment)

7 days

Exacerbation of bronchiectasis (other than secondary to cystic fibrosis) – outpatient treatment

7 days if mild; 10 days if moderate; 14 days if severe

Human bites

7 days

Impetigo contagiosa (widespread infection)

5 days

Infected chronic wounds, including arterial or venous leg ulcers

7 days (up to 14 days if slow response to treatment)

Limb cellulitis - outpatient treatment

5-7 days

Otitis externa (if cellulitis is present, or disease extends outside the ear canal)

5 days

Scarlet fever

5 days

Superficial surgical site infections

7 days

Use Clarithromycin oral 500mg 12 hourly for 3-5 days in penicillin allergic pregnant patients in the following indication:

  • Infective exacerbation of COPD
